Fabric Preparation

  1. Cut fabric into numerous 3x3" squares (amount dependent on how many colors you want to create; I made 28 color combos so I cut 28 squares. For a basic tertiary color wheel scheme you can just cut 12 squares).

  2. Add 4 cups (or 1/2 gal) of water to a pot and 4 tbsp (equal to 1/2 cup) of soda ash (keep the ratio of soda ash one cup per one gallon of warm water).

Dye Bath

  • Make concentrates of each dye pigment mixing 1 tsp of dye powder with 1/4 cup of hot water.

  • Add 1 cup of warm/room temperature water to each concentrate.

  • Combine primary color dyes to create secondary colors and secondary colors with primary colors to make tertiary colors (keep the mix ration 1:1 eg. 4tbsp of red with 4tbsp of blue).

  • Combine other colors to make random color combinations.

  • Add fabric to dye and let it soak for one hour.

  • After soaking, rinse fabrics under cold water until the water runs clear.

*I made two dye baths as the blue color came out weird in the first round (photo on the right).
