Rosemary dye

Dye Experiment Materials: 

  • 79 grams of fresh rosemary 

  • (pre-washed) silk and and cotton fabric (cut into 6x6" squares)

  • pot (not used for cooking

  • strainer

Fabric preparation: 

  1. Add 1/2 gallon of  water to a pot.

  2. Mix 8tsp of alum with 1 cup of hot water.

  3. Bring pot to boil and add fabric.

  4. Simmer pot for one hour. 

  5. Leave overnight to cool down. 

  6. Rinse fabric under warm water.

Dye bath:  

  1. Fill the pot with water halfway.

  2. Bring to boil.

  3. Add rosemary to pot.

  4. Simmer pot for 1 hour.

  5. Strain rosemary out of dye bath.

  6. Bring pot to boil.

  7. Add fabric.

  8. Simmer for one 1 hour.*

  9. Turn off heat and let fabric sit in dye bath overnight (I left mine in for 17 hours total).

 

*I added an additional three cups of water as some of the water evaporated due to all the heat.
